Norcross, Georgia — Optical fiber product manufacturer OFS announced the latest addition to its Outside Plant (OSP) optical fiber cable, which is driven by the company's proprietary crimpable ribbon technology. AccuRoll Dry Core (DC) Reelable (RR) cables have 144 to 432 optical fibers and use the familiar and cost-effective OSP cable design to provide twice the fiber density of similar standard flat ribbon cables. A key feature of this cable is the core tube, which provides enhanced ribbon protection over other flexible ribbon cables.

AccuRoll DC RR cables provide dielectric and metal construction, optimized for blown and pull installations. Combined with excellent kinking and compression performance, these characteristics make this cable a natural choice for underground, direct burial and lashing air deployment.

AccuRoll DC RR armored cables provide the smallest cable outer diameter (OD) available today for their cable types. In addition, customers can order all AccuRoll DC RR cables, some of the longest lengths can be used for medium to high fiber count crimpable ribbon cables.

The AccuRoll DC RR cable adopts a crimpable ribbon structure, which is a technological advancement in OSP cabling. In a crimpable ribbon cable, 12 optical fibers are partially bonded at predetermined points to form a very flexible ribbon, allowing the ribbon to be rolled into a very tight bundle, doubling the fiber density of the cable. When connected in a cable, these fibers behave very similarly to traditional ribbon fibers, and can be spliced efficiently using traditional flat ribbon machines and procedures, or can be easily broken down into single or multiple fibers.

As the number of optical fibers increases, but duct space and cable storage are still valuable, these smaller, lighter, and more flexible cables can become an excellent alternative to the more traditional flat ribbon cable technology. At the same time, these cables allow installers to double the density of important pathways compared to standard cable designs.

Since the early 1980s, traditional flat fiber ribbons have been deployed. The optical fiber is fixed in place by a somewhat rigid base material and placed in different cable structures. Although these straps are easy to stack and splice in cables, they are not as efficient as crimpable straps within the cable structure. The crimpable ribbon technology increases the fiber density in the cable while retaining the splicing efficiency that ribbon cable users value.

OFS plans to extend the AccuRoll DC RR cable with cables with fiber counts from 12 to 96 later in 2019. The cable will be exhibited at the ISE Expo in Ft. Worth Convention Center, Ft. September 25th to 26th, Texas is worth it, or contact your OFS representative for more information.
