AFL, a subsidiary of Fujikura, Japan, officially opened a new factory in Swindon (Wiltshire) today. This factory will be their first factory in the UK and Europe to produce a "new" fiber optic broadband cable. Network operators such as Openreach (BT) support their fiber-to-the-home (FTTP) deployment.

Huge new manufacturing facilities will also help increase local employment opportunities and skills, which to a certain extent reflects the huge demand for fiber optic cables in the UK market. About a hundred network operators are busy building various scales of New FTTP network.

The new plant in Swindon also marks the start of commercial production of Fujikura's new air-blown twisted tube cable (AB-WTC) using SpiderWeb Ribbon® (SWR®) fiber technology in the UK. Openreach started using this technology as early as 2019. (Details are here).

Paul Bennett, General Manager of Swindon AFL said:

"This new fiber optic cable technology allows us to manufacture high-fiber count, high-density fiber optic cables that can be installed faster than traditional fiber optic cables. This technology is an exciting innovation in the industry; The factory produces it, where we have a strong and skilled labor force and a long manufacturing history.

AFL's further investment in Swindon is not only significant for network deployment and upgrades, but because we have added the most advanced equipment, it has also allowed us to increase cable production. "

The fiber optic cables produced at their new plant on Radway Road will be supplied to network infrastructure projects in the UK and Europe.

outstanding. It is very meaningful to everyone.

I just finished the 2 sets of AFL launch leads that I have been ordering since August, and the other set is still on backorder...so it’s just a bit delayed.

But the equipment is good. Hope their domestic production can increase very well!
