Remee's access control wiring saves warehouse costs for global online retailers

Florida, New York (PRWEB) November 16, 2021

Remee Wire & Cable worked with security designer and integrator Acenes to design a series of access control cables for this customer. Acenes noticed that although this large online retailer has a strong security hardware and software system, its access control wiring scheme has many problems. Acenes has observed that there are many types of cables required for warehouse access control, which often leads to time-consuming and costly installation errors. Acenes and Remee Wire and Cable have designed a new wiring solution that uses composite access control cables (part of the Remee Vigilance™ security cable series) to reduce the number of cables pulled out and provide better cable organization and identification to Minimize at the termination point.

A large online retailer with a global warehouse business has a powerful security software platform and related hardware to run its very efficient security system. However, the wiring system that meets its rapidly growing access control needs is another matter. Each warehouse has 30-50 access control doors on average, and each door requires 3-5 mandatory cables. In addition to other equipment, about 200-250 cables need to be pulled out to connect to various security system panel warehouses. The wires will be labeled, but errors will occur. Some wires are eventually confused and mislabeled, while other wires are confused for various reasons and terminated to the wrong control panel.

When the installer connects the cable to the wrong controller, this process usually results in many installation errors. Due to these inevitable errors, the installation task is cumbersome. As a result, these errors are costly and slow down the debugging of access control doors in the warehouse. Meeting the construction schedule is critical for large power distribution companies to achieve their goals. In addition, the cable structure containing the power supply assembly is bulky and the transportation cost is high, and it is difficult to pull during the installation process.

The new cable design greatly reduces the time required to classify various individual cables, thus simplifying the installation process.

In order to solve the problems caused by the type and quantity of cables, Acenes worked with Remee to aggregate all 5 component cables (each door) under one sheath. This reduces the average number of cables drawn from 250 to only 50—the number of individual cables drawn has been reduced by 80%, thereby reducing overall installation costs. In addition, the component cables and outer sheath are color-coded to simplify identification and improve correct termination.

The various door types used in the customer’s warehouse can be divided into three basic types. Therefore, the outer sheath of the composite cable uses three colors, one for each door type-green (PN 4722A), blue (PN 4722B) and Gray (PN 5465).

Each of these 3 different composite cables includes component cables, each with a specific AWG and color, and is designed to run specific access control functions. A key challenge of the project was to minimize the outer diameter of the component cables to reduce weight and save transportation costs. Acenes also needs the cumulative number of feet used per foot marked on the cable jacket so that the installer knows the number of feet remaining on the reel for use.

The most important component cable is 5333-SI-Card Reader. The current standard reader protocol is Weigand, but the security industry is migrating to the new Open Supervisory Device Protocol (OSDP). OSDP provides the higher level of security required. The reader 5333-SI is designed to handle current Wiegand readers and new OSDP readers. The use of 5333-SI can make the cable face the future, thereby protecting the wiring investment.

By adding an integral foil shield with drain wire to the 5333-SI assembly, the cable capacitance is reduced to 12.5 pF/ft., exceeding the capacitance requirement of Cat.1. 6 cables. In addition, it meets the 120 ohm impedance requirement of the RS-485 protocol. These design improvements enable 5333-SI to easily exceed RS-485 communication requirements.

Remee's Vigilance™ series access control cables are already suitable for both Weigand and OSDP technologies, so they are the ideal choice for this wiring system, which uses both technologies.
