Nigeria needs an additional 120,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables and about 40,000 additional Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) if it must meet its 2025 Nigeria National Broadband Plan (NNBP).

Nigeria communications commission (NCC) has disclosed that Nigeria needs an additional 120,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables and about 40,000 additional Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) if it must meet its 2025 Nigeria National Broadband Plan (NNBP).

In his keynote address, at the Third Annual Stakeholders Conference of Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), themed: “Transforming Lagos State into a Smart City Hub in Africa – The Government’s Infrastructure Approach”, the Executive Commissioner (Stakeholders’ Management) of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Adeleke Adewolu stated that the theme of the conference is very ideal since the broadband infrastructure is the backbone of Smart Cities.

In his words, “It is inevitable that the NCC and LASIMRA must engage and collaborate, but sometimes in disagreement, as Lagos State is clearly the hub of telecoms and technology activities in Nigeria.

Mr. Adeleke, therefore urged the government at various levels to increase internet capacity in the country due to its huge infrastructure deficit, stating that “for instance, we need over 120,000 additional kilometers of Fibre Optic Cables from the current figure of fewer than 60,000 kilometers and about 40,000 additional Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) to meet the NNBP targets by the year 2025”.

In a response to the demands of the NCC, the Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu who was represented by the Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat stated that his administration is committed to improving the provision of adequate infrastructure to fast-track the Smart City Project to optimize the limitless opportunity of a fully digitized economy.

In his words, “The theme of the conference expresses our administration’s commitment to the smart city project through the deployment of cutting edge technology to bring about improved and effective governance as well as providing the necessary infrastructure to support the widespread application of technology to create opportunities and enhance socio-economic growth”.

American multinational e-commerce company Amazon has halted the test of its automated delivery robot called “Amazon Scout” after it failed to meet customers’ needs.

American multinational e-commerce company Amazon has halted the test of its automated delivery robot called “Amazon Scout” after it failed to meet customers’ needs.

The company which began the testing of its delivery robot in 2019, disclosed that due to the halt of its delivery robot, Amazon will offer new positions to 400 people who worked on the project.

Following the company’s plan to stop the test of its “Amazon Scout”, a spokesperson at the company said, “During our Scout limited field test, we worked to create a unique delivery experience, but learned through feedback that there were aspects of the program that weren’t meeting customers’ needs,” Alisa Carroll, an Amazon spokesperson, told members of the media.

“As a result, we are ending our field tests and reorienting the program. We are working with employees during this transition, matching them to open roles that best fit their experience and skills.”

However, the spokesperson further disclosed the e-commerce company isn’t totally abandoning the idea of an autonomous robot, rather it will continue to look into the technology, though the vast majority of workers will be reassigned to other programs.

Amazon Scout was officially unveiled in 2019, following the e-commerce giant’s acquisition of robotics firm Dispatch two years prior.

In August 2019, the robots started delivering packages to customers in Irvine California on a test basis, with human monitors. The package is put inside the robot and driven to the customer who opens it and collects the package.

At the time of launch, the company touted the program as a method for continuing deliveries amid COVID shutdowns, though the operation  still required the presence of “Scout Ambassadors” humans tasked with making sure nothing went wrong.

Due to the recent global inflation ravaging economies, the scrapping of Amazon Scout is the latest in a series of cost-cutting maneuvers for Amazon, which has experienced slowing sales growth in 2022.

Kenya’s mobile network operator Safaricom has officially launched its network in Ethiopia, which makes it the first private operator in one of Africa’s largest telecom markets.

Kenya’s mobile network operator Safaricom has officially launched its network in Ethiopia, which makes it the first private operator in one of Africa’s largest telecom markets.

This is Safaricom’s first expansion outside Kenya, where it holds a virtual monopoly in the telecoms and mobile money sectors. Its expansion into Ethiopia will see it compete with the Ethiopian telecommunication company Ethio telecom, previously known as the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation.

The state-owned Ethio Telecom has for a long time operated as a monopoly telecoms company, with 54 million subscribers in Ethiopia.

Following Safaricom’s launch in Ethiopia, the network operator intends to roll out its services in 14 cities between now and April 2023 to cover 25 cities, so as to enable it to meet the 25% population coverage obligation in its license.

Speaking on its launch in Ethiopia, the CEO of the company Peter Ndegwa said, “Today I am delighted for the opportunity for Safaricom Ethiopia to start serving the people of Ethiopia with high-quality telecommunications services.

“We look forward to sharing our vision of Transforming Lives with Ethiopians, working together to uplift communities, and creating opportunities through the transformative power of the mobile phone.

“We are optimistic about how the technology and connectivity we are providing will contribute to a digital future and eventually transform people’s lives through digital solutions.”

“We have deepened digital and financial inclusion in Kenya by connecting people to people, people to opportunities, and people to information.

“With these lessons and experiences, we look forward to positively impacting the people of Ethiopia with a sustainable and quality mobile network that will be a vital launch pad for nationwide digital telecommunications services to over 118 million Ethiopians.”

Experts have disclosed that Safaricom’s expansion of its network into Ethiopia can be a potential win for the company, if it can replicate its successes in Ethiopia outside Kenya where it has strong dominance in the Kenyan market, both in the Telecommunications Industry and in mobile money,  Investor King understands.

The Safaricom network will offer 4G data, voice, and SMS services between Safaricom Ethiopia and Ethio Telecom customers.

Following Elon Musk’s decision to opt-out of the $44 billion Twitter acquisition deal, a Delaware Court of Chancery in the United States has ordered the Tesla CEO to acquire the micro-blogging platform within 22 days.

Following Elon Musk’s decision to opt-out of the $44 billion Twitter acquisition deal, a Delaware Court of Chancery in the United States has ordered the Tesla CEO to acquire the micro-blogging platform within 22 days.

The judge presiding over the case made the order following Musk’s decision to proceed with the acquisition of the social networking company 12 days before the court trial on the lawsuit Twitter filed against him.

Musk had earlier opted out of the Twitter deal where he accused the platform of thwarting his information rights by not providing enough data on fake accounts on the platform.

Musk claimed in a tweet that Twitter is “20% fake/spam accounts” and suggested Twitter’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission were misleading.   The company had earlier disclosed that only less than 5% of its daily active users are spam accounts.

However, the Tesla CEO wasn’t convinced by the number of bots accounts twitter claimed were on the platform. He, therefore, insisted that his acquisition of the social media company cannot move forward until he sees more information about the prevalence of spam accounts.

It should be recalled that on May 27, 2022 Investors King reported that Twitter investors dragged Elon Musk to court over the way he handled the  $44 billion acquisition deal.

Twitter also displeased by Musk’s action filed a lawsuit in the Delaware Court of Chancery, urging him to complete his $44 billion takeover of the social media company where it accused him of “outlandish” and “bad faith” actions that have caused the platform irreparable harm and “wreaked havoc” on its stock price.

Recently, during a court hearing after the judge at the Delaware court had given Musk a 22 days ultimatum, he asked that Twitter drop the initial lawsuit scheduled for October 17, but the social media company insisted that it would keep the litigation alive until the deal was concluded.

Musk had made the request stating that the lawsuit should be stepped down to enable him to raise the needed capital for the acquisition ahead of the October 28 deadline.
