City Administrator Deston Dishion reported Monday that the city has issued encroachment permits to Frontier Communications for the company’s planned fiber upgrade in Bishop, the rollout of which is scheduled to start in July.

“Everything’s falling together,” Dishion said. “It’s going happen.”

Douglas McAllister, a Frontier Communications vice president, has stated that Frontier’s primary network in Bishop is built via copper cables that are aerially placed. Frontier’s upcoming project will upgrade an overwhelming majority of the city by placing new fiber optic cable throughout the city.

McAllister has said some of the speed offerings will be a choice of 500M, 1G, and 2G. The speeds also are asymmetrical, which means customers will experience similar download and upload speeds.

Officials at the state and local level say that upgrading broadband internet service will lead to greater economic development for the area as well as improving residents’ quality of life in general.
