LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Zayo Group Holdings, the world's leading provider of optical fiber communication solutions, today announced the deployment of a new submarine cable line called "Zeus". The new highly reinforced, hybrid, ultra-low loss (ULL) cable will be parallel to but different from Zayo's existing Circe North submarine route, directly connecting the United Kingdom and the European continent through Lowestoft in the United Kingdom and Zandvoort in the Netherlands. Zeus represents a major upgrade in functionality, with a potential capacity of more than 4,000 terabytes per second (Tbps). Zeus will enable key connections and next-generation technologies for operators, hyperscale enterprises and large enterprises in this important corridor, all of which rely on low-latency, low-loss, and high-capacity bandwidth connections.

Jesper Aagaard, President of Zayo Europe, said: "The deployment of the Zeus submarine route demonstrates our commitment to expanding our network coverage in Europe, while also providing high-quality basic connections for customers in major markets around the world." "This investment will support. The global demand for bandwidth and capacity for data usage and transmission across multiple sectors has increased dramatically, mainly due to the shift to cloud services and the rapid increase in the number of network equipment and connections."

The project follows world-class engineering and sustainability standards, and measures are taken to ensure low emissions. These measures include choosing a DEME Group Living Stone vessel powered by dual fuel capability to install marine cables. In addition, in addition to heat recovery, the ship also uses biodegradable grease and oil to reduce fuel consumption and minimize carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions.

Zayo used Hexatronic's high-fiber count fiber optic cable in this project, which provides the latest generation of fiber optic cable technology, including high-capacity 192 fiber, 100% double-armored fiber optic cable with higher compression resistance, and ULL fiber technology. In addition to increasing capacity, the cable will also provide an unparalleled level of flexibility for the route.

According to the International Cable Protection Committee, 100 to 200 damaged submarine cables are reported every year, most of which are caused by human activities led by fishing. To mitigate the impact of this activity, the target burial depth of the cable will be two to three meters below the seabed surface to provide better protection and higher service availability.

"Zeus subsea routes not only represent the latest technology in equipment and installation, but also represent our dedication to responsible and sustainable infrastructure," added Yannick Leboyer, Chief Operating Officer of Zayo Europe.

The Zeus diversified subsea system is owned and operated by Zayo. Offshore operations will begin in August 2021 and are expected to be operational by the end of the first quarter of 2022. Zayo is exploring more new subsea routes to increase the capacity of the Circe South route between the UK and France.
