Our Connected World: Advanced Fiber Optic Applications in Aviation Aircraft-MarketScale

Aircraft are becoming more and more advanced in the use of technology. Nevertheless, when most of the technologies are inside the aircraft, it is difficult to know their progress. TE Connectivity Rugged Fiber Engineering Manager and Product Manager Mark Benton and our Connected World host Tyler Kern discussed an aspect of advancing air technology-the application of robust fiber optic air optics for urban air traffic.

Weight, space, bandwidth, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) drive current aviation applications. The emerging eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) application is electric, which can reduce weight and have the advantages of anti-EMI, rather than high-speed requirements.

One product TE manufactured to support eVTOL applications is fiber optic cable assemblies. Compared with traditional Ethernet cables, duplex optical cables can save 25% of space and 50% of weight. It is also not affected by electrical noise and does not require the use of shielded copper cables, thereby reducing size and weight. This means longer flight time and range or increased passenger capacity.

Optical flex circuit components include thousands of optical fibers located on flexible wiring, creating versatility in application crossover and minimizing stress. The material protecting the fiber allows bending and twisting in any direction.

TE adopts a systematic approach to work with client design teams as early as possible and create solutions that meet their requirements. "TE usually tries to develop products and features that meet emerging standards. Then, we can provide access to these solutions for the entire market, ultimately reducing everyone's cost due to scale," Benton declared.
