Guided Wave introduces a temperature-controlled multipurpose flow cell (MPFC) for FT-NIR analyzers. The flow cell now has internal pipes for cooling or heating fluid. Although the exchanged heat is not enough to affect the fast-flowing sample, it helps to maintain the temperature of the pretreated sample.

In certain applications, such as polymer cross-linking, high-viscosity fluids, or nucleation reactions, the temperature of the fluid needs to be accurately controlled to ensure that the reaction continues and passes through the flow cell as expected. If the temperature drops, the fluid may freeze in the flow cell, or the length of the polymer chain may be inaccurate.

The figure above shows the path of the heat exchange fluid. Image source: Guided waves.

When the process material does not require further guarantees for the high-safety flow cell, or when the probe is not suitable for direct insertion, the Guided Wave MPFC series can be used. One of the main advantages of near-infrared process spectroscopy is the use of intrinsically safe fiber optic cables to remotely locate the probe.

Although inserting the probe directly avoids the sample system, sample loop, and related problems, it is sometimes necessary to install the sample loop for maintenance, safety, and/or sample adjustment reasons.

MPFC is a compact, rugged, and user-friendly example interface that can be easily installed and maintained more easily. The sapphire window of MPFC can be cleaned directly by removing the cleaning plug and directly entering the window. This can be done without disconnecting fiber optic cables or process lines. The clean port is a novel feature designed by Guided Wave.

Guided Wave manufactures a heated flow cell, so it can be fully integrated into all fiber optic spectrophotometers. The heated flow cell can be used for AIT's optical analyzer, ABB's full range of FT-NIR spectrometers and Matrix-F FT-NIR analyzers.

Guided Wave's sample interface provides market-leading optical efficiency, and when connected with 400–600 µm fiber optic cables and FC or SMA 905 connectors, it will enhance the optical performance of any spectrometer. The Clearview DB photometer and NIR-O full spectrum DG-NIR spectrometer are the only analyzers designed to "optically match" with the guided wave probe.

MPFC provides excellent optical performance, just like other optical probes from Guided Wave. Usually, the peak transmission exceeds 50%, which means more signal and lower measurement noise, which together translate into lower detection limits. Buying a guided wave probe will improve the performance of any spectrometer.

MPFC works within the temperature and pressure ranges given below:

The flow cell has five standard light paths-1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 mm.

Although MPFC is made of standard 316 L stainless steel, there are several other alloys to choose from. Appropriate O-ring materials should be specified to meet the user's process chemistry and safety requirements.

Typical materials such as EPDM, Kalrez® and Viton are easily available. Users can check the temperature specifications of different O-ring materials and suitable resources for chemical compatibility with their processes.

The main elements of the MPFC design are GW clean ports, simple and maintainable O-ring seals, clean flow patterns, sapphire windows, slip joint pipe-ready connections, high optical efficiency and O-ring seal optics to avoid environmental moisture penetration .

The probe can be disassembled in the field for O-ring repair, and then reassembled without changing the length of the optical path-this is an important parameter for repeatable measurement.

Guided Wave's MPFC now includes a double seal at the sapphire "window to process" interface. This provides more protection for the expensive internal optical lens.
