On Sunday, a fire severely disrupted the Internet and cable service of Spectrum customers in the Los Angeles area.
The telecommunications giant said that a fire broke out at the South Los Angeles overpass shortly before 10 am on Sunday and damaged the company's fiber optic lines. Spectrum publicly acknowledged the interruption for the first time on Twitter at 11:28 in the morning. But Down Detector, a company that tracks power outage reports on social media, said that customer dissatisfaction began to flood in at 9 a.m.
Spectrum said that most of the people affected live in South Los Angeles, but customers in Southeast Los Angeles, Ladella Heights, Hyde Park and Midtown also complained about power outages. According to Down Detector, by 7pm, 3,000 complaints had been posted on social media. Some customers stated that they had been out of service for up to seven hours.
"Our engineers are working hard to replace and repair the fiber as soon as possible to restore our service," Spectrum said in an email statement at 7:45 on Sunday evening
Subscribers complained that they were unable to complete homework, work from home and watch streaming services. They worry that the power outage will affect the working day on Monday, and said that this situation highlights the over-reliance on technology, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to put many people in trouble at home.
Spectrum said that services will be fully restored overnight.
